At Huntington University we host an event each spring to encourage students to apply for a variety of leadership opportunities on campus. During the month of February, we give out hand-delivered invitations (via our current RAs) to students in whom we (or our RAs) see leadership potential. The event is held in the evening and includes a leadership fair of a variety of campus organizations in which students could get involved. Residence Life is only one of many options. The event then has a special speaker who’s job is to motivate and encourage these specific students to explore an area of leadership that best suites his/her gifts. We generally have between 80-100 students come. If nothing else, it has encouraged students who didn’t know they had leadership qualities and helped them think more seriously about what they have to offer.

We have started a “LeadersLive” series here at Baptist College of Health Sciences. It is a fairly new program, but it has started out well received. Since we are a Health Sciences only College and we are owned by Baptist Memorial Health Care Corporation we choose to start out by inviting leaders from the Corporation to speak about how they view leadership. Our initial target audience is current student leaders from campus organizations and the advisors, as well as RAs, and SGA. We also invite the College administrators. When the President of the College show up at the program it reinforces the importance of leadership development. We think there is a lot of potential and directions we can take the series.
