Mission of Residential Life and Housing

The mission of Residential Life and Housing is to help students know that they matter by fostering a purposeful community, promoting responsible living, and encouraging life-long learning in a Christ-centered environment.

Residential Life and Housing focuses on the following five learning objectives that are stressed with our students as key areas of importance for their college experience:

• Identity Development
• Spiritual Formation
• Global and Civic Engagement
• Communal Living

Function of Position:

The Resident Director (RD) is a full-time, 10½ month live-in position and is responsible for the comprehensive management of the Residential Life and Housing program in a residence hall(s) of approximately 125-300 residents.

The start date for anticipated openings: June 29, 2020.

Qualifications:

a. Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree is preferred. Resident Directors without a graduate degree are expected to pursue one once hired as a part of their compensation package.
b. Supervisory, training, and crisis management experience are considered a plus.
c. Must be willing to live in a residence hall with a focus on serving students.
d. A strong profession of Christian faith and a commitment to not teaching contrary doctrine to the sponsoring denomination (Church of God).
e. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
f. Successfully complete a federal background check and meet necessary standards for employment.
g. Commitment to remain drug and alcohol-free during the time of employment.

Responsibilities and Skills:

Leadership and Mentoring
a. Provide training for residence hall staff.
b. Prepare for and lead weekly team meetings.
c. Supervise and evaluate the residence hall staff.
d. Have weekly one-on-one supervision/mentorship time with each member of team.
e. Assist with recruiting and hiring.

Student Learning and Interpersonal Interaction
a. Plan engaging residence hall programs aimed at student learning.
b. Identify students with leadership ability and provide opportunities for them to develop.
c. Be a visible and available presence to the students in the residence hall.
d. Counsel students on an informal basis and provide referrals when necessary.
e. Promote consistent accountability through the student conduct process.
f. Offer support to at-risk students.
g. Invest in the faith development of students.

Administrative
a. Create a schedule that provides adequate supervision of residence hall.
b. Supervise the opening and closing of the residence hall each semester.
c. Oversight of roommate/suitemate assignments and room changes within residence hall.
d. Manage the budget and finances for the residence hall.
e. Communicate and follow up with custodial and maintenance needs to Physical Plant.
f. Maintain safety and emergency protocol, including drill conduction and staff training.
g. Resident Directors will be asked to work one holiday rotation each year.
h. Due to the demands and hours worked throughout the academic year, Resident Directors will receive extra days during breaks, beyond the standard university support staff allowance with the exception of Resident Directors on-duty during a break

Leadership and Professional Development
a. Resident Directors will be placed on various committees to lead, organize, and execute the program of Residential Life and Housing.
b. Resident Directors may be given the opportunity to attend a student development conference in the years when funds are available.
c. Resident Directors will enroll in one course as part of training (first fall semester).
d. Resident Directors are expected to regularly attend and support Lee University chapel.

Supervision and Evaluation
Resident Directors report directly to their Area Coordinator. In addition, this position receives supervision and support from the Assistant Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director of Housing, and the Director of Residential Life and Housing.
